We welcome motivated students and postdoctoral researchers to join the Land System Governance Lab at Cornell University. If you are interested in working together, please send your CV and a short description of your research interests.
Graduate Students
Opportunities for graduate study (Masters or PhD) in Development Studies are available in the Section of Global Development in the Ashley School at Cornell University. A full Graduate Assistantship will be provided with full tuition waiver and subsidized health insurance. Graduate research in the lab examines how institutions, markets, communities, and changing patterns of land use and control shape environmental and development outcomes. Potential thesis and dissertation topics include:
- Land control and land-system transformations
- Agrifood systems and climate adaptation
- Dryland sustainability
- Sustainability transitions
- Environmental governance and inequality
- Spatial and quantitative analysis
If you are interested in graduate study with the lab, please email Dr. Chuan Liao (cl824@cornell.edu) with your CV and a brief statement describing your research interests, preparation, and professional goals. Prospective students may apply through the Graduate Field of Development Studies website. I also advise students through the Graduate Fields of Natural Resources and the Environment and Regional Science.
Undergraduate Researchers
Undergraduate students interested in research on land systems, sustainability, development, or human–environment interactions are welcome to get in touch. Opportunities may include assisting with data analysis, literature reviews, spatial research, and ongoing lab projects. Please email Dr. Chuan Liao with a brief description of your interests, relevant experience, and availability.
Postdoctoral Researchers
Prospective postdoctoral researchers whose work aligns with the lab’s interests in land system governance, agrifood systems, sustainability transitions, and human–environment change are welcome to get in touch. I am happy to discuss potential projects and support applications to fellowship programs, such as Cornell Atkinson Postdoc Fellowship and NSF Postdoc Fellowship.
